Adele’s 21 to top UK charts

Edit: Looks like we all got too excited.  Nicole Scherzinger just bumped Adele from the number one spot by selling 98,000 copies of her new album.  Worry not, though. “Adele’s 21 has achieved in just two months what took Lady Gaga’s The Fame over two years. This really is a coming of age for digital album sales,” commented Martin Talbot from the Official Charts Company.

Well, it looks like I’ve done something right…according to the UK, at least. A few weeks ago, I featured Adele’s Turning Tables, a song off of her most recent album, as song of the day, and I picked up 21 during my most recent Target binge. Her album has enjoyed the top spot on the UK charts for the past eight weeks. Should it stay comfortable until next Sunday, it will share the nine consecutive weeks record with The Beatles’ 21st century album “1.” Madonna’s 1990 album, “Immaculate Collection,” is tied with “1.”

Interestingly enough, the top four albums on the UK charts have all been released by indie labels. With Arcade Fire taking a Grammy win and the seemingly strong presence indie music has in the UK, maybe 2011 will force indie into the mainstream. Oh, the humanity!
